Teachers’ Union Leader Rebukes Melania Trump’s AI Advocacy
The first lady defends her AI remarks from her technology summit in a social media post.

The public debate over the pros and cons of artificial intelligence has ignited discord between First Lady Melania Trump and the leader of one of the largest teachers’ unions, the American Federation of Teachers, in the United States.
On Thursday, Randi Weingarten, the president of the AFT, criticized the first lady and her Fostering the Future Together initiative, which Weingarten said replaces human teachers with artificial intelligence-powered robots.
“Well, give the first lady her due—she said the quiet part out loud,” Weingarten said in a statement. “We know this administration has no real understanding of what teachers do, and suggesting robots can replace them makes that clear. Anyone who cares about teaching and learning knows there is no substitute for the daily magic that happens between educators and students in the classroom.”
Weingarten went on to say that AI technology may be helpful as a tool, but that it can never replace the human skills and knowledge needed to solve human problems or the relationship building and critical thinking that kids need to thrive.
“Equally problematic, it exacerbates, not just ignores, all the harm we are now learning about from the effects of screens, particularly on young people,” Weingarten said, adding that Congress and the president, not simply courts and juries, should be setting forth the appropriate guardrails and responsibilities.
The debate comes on the heels of Mrs. Trump’s two-day technology summit where she welcomed 45 spouses of global leaders at the U.S. Department of State and the White House to discuss practical solutions that will empower children around the world with the use of technology and education. The event also showcased a humanoid robot that entered the East Room of the White House alongside the first lady and greeted the participants in 11 languages.
Mrs. Trump laid out a vision of artificial intelligence that placed America at the pinnacle of countries, she said, with an obligation to ensure its children become the most technologically fluent and educated generation in the world. She spoke about robots providing personalized experiences adaptive to the needs of each student. AI-powered robots would boost analytical skills and problem solving and adapt in real time to a student’s pace, prior knowledge, and even emotional state, she said.
In response to the criticism, Mrs. Trump on Friday morning continued to advocate for the use of AI to improve the academic standings of students in the United States.
“America must strive to improve. Today, we can take proactive steps to enhance our children’s academic growth by leveraging AI as a tool in the education process,” Mrs. Trump said her official White House account on X.
The first lady in her post noted that teachers are embracing the use of AI and pointed to the 2,700 schools participating in a K-12 AI Zoom Workshop in January and that the White House Presidential AI Challenge has participants from all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Washington , D.C.
“What she did yesterday was every parent’s nightmare,” Weingarten said during an inaugural Workers First AI Summit hosted by the AFL-CIO on Thursday, reported NBC News, adding that the meeting of labor representatives and civil society organizations aimed to bring workers across industries together to build a unified front against AI’s unchecked growth and its growing impact on American workers.
“This is exactly what Big Tech wants to create: a sense of a society that is being led by and taught by robots, displacing every bit of all of who we are, starting with education,” Weingarten said at the session, according to NBC News.
Mrs. Trump in her post reiterated many of the points she made at the summit she hosted this week including that AI provides a personalized experience and is adaptive to the needs of each student.
“Our children can develop deeper critical thinking and independent reasoning abilities, plus boost their analytical skills and problem-solving capabilities by using AI as a tool,” the first lady said in her post. “The bi-product—a more well-rounded lifestyle for our children—freeing up time for being with friends, family, playing sports, and developing interests beyond school. But we must balance our tech optimism with caution. The safety of our next generation is always paramount.”
Worldwide, questions are swirling about the safety, accuracy and impact AI will have on children without any answers currently providing clarity. Mrs. Trump closed her statement on social media with her own questions.
“Shouldn’t teachers use AI to deliver the most current, accurate knowledge to your child?” she asked. “And if private tutoring isn’t an option, shouldn’t technology empower students to strengthen their weaknesses at home?”

President and Mrs. George W. Bush Meet with Ukrainian First Lady
A day after Ukrainian First Lady Olena Zelenska participated in First Lady Melania Trump’s global gathering of spouses of international leaders about the future of technology and artificial intelligence, she met with former President George W. Bush and former First Lady Laura Bush at the Bush Institute in Dallas, announced the George W. Bush Presidential Center on Thursday.
“We admire your country’s bravery and ingenuity,” said President George W. Bush in a statement released by the Center. “We want the people of Ukraine to know that we continue to stand with America’s ally, Ukraine. You are fighting for freedom, and I believe you will prevail.”
In February, the Bush Institute published policy recommendations on how the West can help Ukraine win following the fourth anniversary of the Russian-led war.
“[Russian President Vladimir] Putin is responsible for the gravest security crisis on the European continent since World War II, the press release said, adding “The Bush Institute believes that now is the time to stop him—and to do so, the U.S. must continue its support of Ukraine.”
