Melania Trump Defends Her Stance on AI and Education
The first lady responds to criticism in an opinion piece clarifying that teachers 'remain the foundation of education.'

First Lady Melania Trump continued to push her message embracing artificial intelligence as a tool in education in an opinion piece she penned and that Fox News published on Saturday.
The first lady wrote about her objectives from the Fostering the Future Together Global Coalition Summit that took place at the U.S. Department of State and the White House last month with 45 spouses of global leaders. The gathering captured headlines after a humanoid robot walked into the White House East Room alongside Mrs. Trump.
“Artificial intelligence (AI) provides access to an elite education—the highest level of human knowledge—benefiting students, families and educators alike,” Mrs. Trump wrote in her opinion piece.
During the summit, spouses discussed practical solutions that will empower children around the world with the use of technology and education. Concerns were also raised about the safety of children and the use of technology—AI and social media especially.
During the summit, Mrs. Trump laid out a vision of artificial intelligence that placed America at the pinnacle of countries, she said, with an obligation to ensure its children become the most technologically fluent and educated generation in the world. She spoke about robots providing personalized experiences adaptive to the needs of each student. It was that visual of the walking and talking robot coupled with Mrs. Trump’s comments from the summit that sparked harsh criticism from one of the country’s top educators immediately after the global gathering.
Randi Weingarten, the president of the AFT, criticized the first lady and her Fostering the Future Together initiative, which Weingarten said replaces human teachers with artificial intelligence-powered robots.
“We know this administration has no real understanding of what teachers do, and suggesting robots can replace them makes that clear,” Weingarten said last month. “Anyone who cares about teaching and learning knows there is no substitute for the daily magic that happens between educators and students in the classroom.”
In Mrs. Trump’s opinion piece, she responded to such criticism saying, “The naysayers must stop wasting their time fearmongering about robots. AI is a great equalizer and can level the educational playing field for all children. For generations, only wealthier families could afford tutors and specialized programs. AI changes this completely.”
The first lady urged that American children needed to stay competitive by learning how to best leverage AI and continued making her case writing:
“For example, AI-powered tutoring tools can give all students personalized help with difficult subjects and adjust to each child’s pace as needed. Students in remote or under-resourced communities can access expert explanations at any time. In these ways, AI democratizes education and provides children in underserved communities equal access to the best caliber of academics.”
Mrs. Trump also clarified her past remarks when she wrote:
“America’s teachers will remain the foundation of education, but can also be empowered by AI. As their roles evolve, AI will support them with up-to-date information, tools for personalized instruction and more time to focus on critical thinking, creativity and mentorship. AI is not intended to replace teachers with humanoids.”

Melania Trump Announces Fourth Ukrainian Child Reunification
First Lady Melania Trump helped reunite six more Ukrainian children with their families, the White House announced on Thursday. It is the fourth time Mrs. Trump has assisted in the reunification of Ukrainian and Russian children separated by the Russian-led war in Ukraine.
“Reunifying children with their loved ones in this region of the world remains one of the most important global issues today,” Mrs. Trump said in a statement. “I am encouraged that both sides remain committed to ongoing cooperation, raising the safety and well-being of children above this abhorrent war.”
A seventh Ukrainian child will be brought home to family members later this month, according to the White House. The first lady has been working with an unnamed representative to facilitate the reunifications.
In February, Mrs. Trump helped five Ukrainian children and one Russian child reunited with their families.
In December, the first lady orchestrated the reunification of seven Ukrainian children, six boys and one girl, with their families. In October, Mrs. Trump announced that her direct engagement with Russian President Vladimir Putin prompted the reunification of eight children with their families. The first lady said then that she and Mr. Putin have maintained an “open channel of communication” regarding the welfare of the children.
To date, Mrs. Trump has helped reunify 28 children caught in the conflict with their families.
Olena Zelenska, the wife of Ukrainian President Volodymer Zelenksy, told the Dallas Morning News that about 2,000 Ukrainian children have been returned. The Ukrainian government says nearly 20,000 Ukrainian children were taken and they have been working ever since to bring them back. A Ukrainian website tracks the reunifications and showed as of Thursday 2,070 children have been returned.
“This is a very painful issue for us, the issue of illegally abducted Ukrainian children,” Zelenska reportedly said through an interpreter. “We cannot allow for their rights to be violated. This is a violation of international law, and Ukraine is doing absolutely everything to make sure they’re brought back home.”
In August, Mrs. Trump penned a letter to Mr. Putin, which was hand-delivered by President Trump during the Alaskan summit that took place in Anchorage. Then, she wrote that some children in the world “are forced to carry a quiet laughter, untouched by the darkness around them.” She then urged the Russian president to act when she wrote: “Mr. Putin, you can single-handedly restore their melodic laughter.”
In October, Mrs. Trump said she and Putin have maintained an “open channel of communication” regarding the welfare of the children.
