‘Melania’ Documentary Will Debut at Kennedy Center This Month
The announcement comes amid a string of artists and performance companies canceling their scheduled appearances at the center.
First Lady Melania Trump’s anticipated documentary “Melania” will be previewed at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., the day before its global debut.
The announcement was made on Thursday by Kennedy Center interim President Richard Grenell on social media and comes at a time when more than a dozen artists and performance companies have canceled their scheduled appearances after the Kennedy Center’s board voted to rename the center “The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.” It requires approval by Congress for the name to change.
“The premier of ‘Melania’ the movie will be January 29 at the Trump Kennedy Center,” Grenell posted with a link to the trailer.
On Friday, it was announced that the Washington National Opera is leaving the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The opera company made the center its home since 1971. According to NPR, it “stressed the ‘amicability’ of its decision to end its longtime residency at the Kennedy Center. But it said the center’s new business model, which requires productions to be fully-funded in advance, is incompatible with the usual mix of ticket sales, grants and donations that cannot all be secured ahead.”
Former Radio Journalist Who ‘Lived’ and ‘Breathed’ First Ladies Dies
Paulette Brinka, a dedicated journalist and history buff, spent her professional life working as a Long Island, New York, radio anchor and reporter and, later, focused on the captivating lives of America’s first ladies. Brinka died on Dec. 28 after battling cancer. She was 76.
Brinka, in 1974, married fellow broadcast journalist Frank Brinka. The two worked together at Patchogue’s WALK-AM and FM, where he served as news director from 1976 to 1988. At various times Paulette Brinka contributed to WNEW, WCBS and radio network, and wrote for The Suffolk County News. In the early 1990s she became a Brookhaven public official, and in 1997 a leader in the Brookhaven chapter of the women’s employment-support nonprofit Dress for Success. She later taught communication and rhetoric in college at several universities and community colleges, according to an obituary written of Brinka.
A lover of history, “She became a first ladies scholar,” said her friend and one-time newsroom boss Susan Murphy in her obituary. “She lived, breathed, ate, drank and slept first ladies.”
She also was an active, inaugural lifetime member of the First Ladies Association for Research and Education where she participated in several FLARE programs including one on first ladies on the campaign trail.
Brinka referred to First Ladies Studies as her guilty pleasure, a topic she found endlessly compelling, according to a tribute to Brinka on the FLARE website. At one point, Brinka interviewed former First Lady Rosalynn Carter. Among her favorite first ladies was Lucretia Garfield, wife of James A. Garfield, who served as president for only six months in 1881 before he died of an infection as a result of gunshot wounds.
“For three years, she was responsible for keeping the ‘First Ladies in the News’ feature on the website updated,” said Diana Carlin, president of FLARE, in a statement to the nonprofit’s membership. “I know those of you who have worked with and knew Paulette will miss her as I will.”
