Jill Biden to Speak at Democratic National Convention
The first lady will give remarks the same evening her husband, President Joe Biden, is slated to take the convention stage.
It’s official. First Lady Dr. Jill Biden will deliver remarks Monday evening at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, event organizers announced today.
President Joe Biden is expected to headline the convention stage making a forceful case for Vice President Kamala Harris and Gov. Tim Walz, effectively passing the torch, while highlighting the stakes of the election.
In addition to speaking to the Harris-Walz vision for the future and the stakes of this election, the successes of the Biden-Harris Administration will also be a focus of the president’s remarks. He’s expected to spotlight the administration’s accomplishments including successfully overcoming a once in a century pandemic, transforming an economy that was flat on its back to the strongest economy in the world, defending democracy at home and abroad, and restoring decency and dignity to the White House.
“After saving democracy in 2020, President Biden is determined to defeat the threat to democracy posed by Donald Trump,” one official told NBC News.
The speech, officials told NBC, will be a reminder of the importance of Biden immediately endorsing Harris after announcing he would end his candidacy, helping to quickly unite a party in crisis behind her historic candidacy.
For months, Dr. Biden has been crisscrossing the United States attending Biden Victory Fund gatherings, touting Biden-Harris policies, and returning more than once to battleground states before President Biden’s poor performance in the presidential debate against Republican nominee Donald Trump. The first lady routinely traveled talking about the Bidens’ Cancer Moonshot initiative, the recently launched Women’s Health Research initiative, and the importance of education especially at the community college level. Dr. Biden was outspoken in the aftermath of the presidential debate fiercely defending the president and reminding people in her travels that her husband “knows how to tell the truth.”
The Democratic National Convention will take place from Aug. 19 to 22 and draw Democrats from all 50 states and U.S. territories. Primetime convention programming will air live from the United Center in Chicago from 6:30-11 p.m. Eastern/5:30-10 p.m. Central on Monday and 7-11 p.m. Eastern/6-10 p.m. Central on Tuesday through Thursday.
