Volunteers can now apply to help decorate the White House for Christmas.
Melania Trump announced on Monday that applications are now open for volunteers to help decorate the White House for Christmas.
Over the years, the tradition of enlisting the talents of dedicated volunteers has evolved into a highly competitive selection process. Some 12,000 people apply for the more than 100 slots available over the Thanksgiving holiday week when volunteer decorators descend on the White House.
Last year, Mrs. Trump’s holiday theme “Home Is Where the Heart Is” featured a scaled back tour and marked the first time visitors would not enter through the East Wing as a result of President Trump demolishing it late last October. Last year, visitors entered through the North Portico of the White House that faces Pennsylvania Avenue.
The first lady last year appointed French-American fashion and costume designer Herve Pierre, who has designed fashions for four first ladies including Mrs. Trump, to oversee her vision for the decor.
In 2025, 150 volunteer decorators from all 50 states and two U.S. territories helped transform the White House. More than 25 volunteer performing groups from 22 states were selected that featured soloists, choirs, jazz bands and instrumentalists.
Americans from every U.S. state and territory are invited to apply for the opportunity to assist with decorating or showcase their talents as a performer at the holiday open houses.
The deadline to submit a volunteer application is August 28, 2026 at 5 p.m. ET. Selected applicants will be notified by October 2, 2026 at 5 p.m. ET, according to the White House. Selected volunteers are responsible for their individual travel, accommodations, and personal expenses.

Those interested in volunteering to decorate the White House ahead of the Christmas Season may apply here. Individuals applying to volunteer at the White House must be 18 years of age or older to participate. Each person must apply individually; group applications cannot be accepted. Decorating will take place during the week of Monday, November 23 through Sunday, November 29, 2026. Additional details may be found on the application page.
