That was the text I sent to a source the morning of Aug. 14, the day after former President Donald Trump survived an attempted assassination, as I gathered my thoughts about what I was about to write.
At first, the news prompted a flashback to my fifth-grade classroom on the afternoon of March 30, 1981, when my teacher stood at her desk and nervously announced that then President Ronald Reagan had been shot. I paused that memory and set it aside. Then, I wondered: What will former First Lady Melania Trump do? What is our sitting First Lady Dr. Jill Biden thinking? What was former First Lady’s Nancy Reagan’s response? How do their actions impact history?
