Andrew Greer and I met not long after East Wing Magazine launched in 2023 through his work with the Friends of Jimmy Carter in Plains, Georgia. The Carters’ magnetic pull drew him to their hometown of Plains as a young college student where he first attended one of the former president’s famous Sunday school lessons—a day when the former first lady also made a memorable impression.
It changed the trajectory of his life.
So much so, years later Greer picked up from Nashville, Tennessee, and moved to Plains. Since then, he has helped tell the story of Rosalynn and Jimmy Carter through his recently released documentary Plainspoken, his book More Than a President: Sundays with Jimmy Carter, and through his work in the community including organizing the upcoming Butterfly Daze, a two-day event on Aug. 15-16 celebrating Rosalynn Carter.
Our wide-ranging conversation covers his experience with the Carters while filming Plainspoken, insights about the Carters’ relationship from Greer’s book and how the people of Plains are getting on after the passing of Rosalynn in 2023 and Jimmy in 2024.
